Curtain Call, 2025
This work, an introspection, serves as an analysis of Simas’ two personas – The Artist; the loud, artistic, brave and boisterous soul who greats and performs, and Beatriz, the inner soul, the shy, timid, scared being that the façade of The Artist protects. Through the use of archival imagery, narration and character work, Simas provides a reflection on the pains of growing up, moving away from the safe world of a student and into the real world. Through this piece, Simas was forced to encounter and embody a level of vulnerability not common to the artist. This piece reflects on the struggles of growing up, growing grey, and leaving everything you know behind.

[The Strange Family]
This work serves as a reflection on the media the artist grew up with. Growing up in an immigrant household, the artist would frequently watch Telenovelas, or indeed American television and movies dubbed and subtitled into the Portuguese language. Aiming to highlight the struggles of not coming from an English-speaking household, depending on dubbed media and subtitles, the artist creates a campy, 1960s reflection on exaggerated characterizations of her family. Through the embodiment of her immediate family, the artist provides insight into her upbringing, as well as a reflection on how she does or does not fit into her “Strange Family”.
